The State of Geekundspiel - Summer 2017
Dear Friends,
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read, write, and otherwise participate in Geekundspiel. Let me start off by saying that this is not a farewell post. I do want to address where Geekundspiel currently stands, address half a month without updates, and discuss some major changes coming soon.
This blog was created for many, many reasons, but its major function was to get me into a habit of writing daily. From that grew a great many things, including eager contributors, participation in Extra Life, and other great benefits. I've had a lot of goals for the blog, many of which have succeeded, some of which have failed, and a few that have not yet come to fruition.
You'll notice however that the number of posts lately has dwindled. The last post was on May 15th (for what I still deem to be the worst-reviewed film we've done). This is because my time lately has been split between traveling and some exciting developments in my personal and professional life.
First off, I have begun to actively pursue a life-long dream of mine, which I may (or may not) talk about I continue. Second, starting in mid-August, I will be starting online course work on a second Master's degree. Sadly, in a world where I'm working full-time, working on a Masters and pursuing other things, there's just not as much time for blogging as there used to be. But I refuse to abandon it completely. That is why we will be making some changes to the site to allow more flexibility.
- The website's division by dates (Monday Movies, Tuesday Tabletop, etc.) will be disbanded in order to allow more versatility for posting. I don't want to have to wait a week or rush a review to ensure an article is posted on a specific day of the week. This worked well when I had more time, but from now on it would just hamper progress.
- Hopefully more videos and podcasts. This may sound surprising, but filming and editing video and audio is sometimes a lot easier than preparing written articles. Not only that, but audio editing in particular fits within part of the big personal project I mentioned earlier, so the more practice I have with that, the better.
- There will be far more articles about movies, TV, gaming, and general pop cultural, but comics and books will need to be scaled back considerably. I've gotten a lot more posts for literature than expected thanks to some short stories, but reading takes up a lot of time and isn't something I can regularly do every week, especially with the heavy reading I'll need to do for classes, whereas movies and games take up a lot less time. Comics and literature won't be removed completely, they just won't appear as often.
So if you've been with us for awhile, thank you for helping make this little blog feel like something much bigger than it is. We have several great articles and subjects for you guys to look forward to coming up soon! We just ask for your patience during this transition. In the coming days and weeks, we'll be posting:
- Reviews of summer films such as Alien: Covenant, Pirates of the Caribbean, and of course, Wonder Woman.
- A comic review from local artists in the Augusta, Georgia area that I'm stoked to talk about.
- Game reviews and hopefully videos of the newest Smash Up expansion, as well as upcoming reviews of Clank! and Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle.
- Reviews and discussions on topics such as the new MST3K season on Netflix, the upcoming RiffTrax Summer Shorts live show, Steven Universe, and why I love of (and write so often about) Lovecraft.
- And, most excitingly, Jeff, Emily, and I (and possibly Shawn) will be attending Dice Tower Con in Orlando in the beginning of July! We'll be representing the blog of course while playing tons of old and new tabletop games, as well as hosting our very own little Smash Up tournament.
In the meantime, have a great summer and we'll get those updates out as soon as we can!
Sincerely,
Jacob
