RiffTrax Live: Holiday Special Double Feature

On Thursday December 1st, Fathom Events and RiffTrax gave us a special treat by showcasing a double-feature event. Instead of just one film riffed live, we got two, for an extra-long, extra special seasonal treat. Granted, these were not new movies they were showcasing (I would think having to keep up a RiffTrax Live show for almost four hours would be exhausting). Instead they pulled from some of their past winter specials, both of which are equally hilarious, and interspersed them with riffs on holiday photos submitted by fans. 

The first one up was their 2013 live showing of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, a spectacularly terrible movie and one of the classic standbys of the MST3K era. This was the first RiffTrax Live I ever saw, and I still think it's one of their best. The short they showed beforehand, "Santa and the Fairy Snow Queen," is still one of my favorites.

After a 10-minute break, they played the RiffTrax Live Shorts-Stravaganza, which was made up of a series of Christmas-related (and a few non-holiday) shorts from the "good ol' days." This show was performed live in 2009 with special guest "Weird Al" Yankovic who only appeared in one short; a ludicrous black-and-white musical commercial on pork. I was especially excited for this one since I had never seen it before, and this is definitely one of their better shows. Some of the shorts they found are beyond bizarre.

This ends the RiffTrax Live performances for 2016, but I imagine there will be a new Kickstarter campaign launched within the next few months for a new batch of shows for next year. I'll be keeping you guys posted on what's coming and when they'll be released. Until then, check out these titles and the many other fantastic RiffTrax holiday specials available on their website.
